We are launching a series spotlighting student scientific societies operating within the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Chemical Society (PTChem)! This is the oldest student organization at the Faculty of Chemistry and one of the oldest across all of Gdańsk University of Technology. Since 1925, it has brought together ambitious chemistry enthusiasts, and in 2026, the Society celebrates a remarkable milestone – 100 years of continuous activity!
The primary mission of NKCh PG is to develop members' research competencies, foster close collaboration with industry, and actively popularize chemical sciences.
What do NKCh PG members do?
- Water Quality Monitoring: The flagship project of the Society, conducted for over 20 years in partnership with the Coastal Landscape Park. Students routinely monitor physicochemical parameters, carry out spectrophotometric ion analyses, and test for E. coli bacteria in rivers and drainage canals flowing into Puck Bay and seaside bathing areas.
- PLUTONIUM Research Project: Interdisciplinary research conducted under the university's Plutonium Supporting Research Teams grant. The team investigates the seasonal variability of ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea, collaborating with the automation science club and deploying innovative underwater drones for water sample collection.
- Advanced Sorption Materials: Materials engineering research – design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced sorbents designed for the removal of liquid and gaseous contaminants.
- “Chemistry Without Borders” („Chemia bez granic”): A proprietary series of laboratory workshops organized since 2013, where high school students take their first hands-on steps in a professional laboratory under the guidance of students and academic faculty.
- Science Demonstrations & Popularization: Science festivals, open days, and spectacular experiments – showcasing chemistry as a vivid, safe, and deeply fascinating science.
Achievements and Conferences
A flagship initiative organized by the Society since 2015 is the Interdisciplinary Academic Conference on Environmental Protection (IAKOŚ), which annually brings together over 100 speakers from Poland and abroad. Members of the Society consistently earn accolades at prestigious scientific conferences throughout Poland.
Board & Academic Supervision:
